Due to 9/11 and increasing security by Homeland Security the Radiation Health Branch has been clamping down on how engineering firms and DOT's transport nuclear gauges in an open bed truck. A chain wrapped around the handles to your truck does not satisfy the requirements of your Radiation License. A transport violation will result in a "Notice of Violation" and corrective action.
"License Condition, in part, states that the Radiation Safety Officer shall ensure security measures required by this license meet the following minimum standards: Transport vehicle must be equipped to provide security of the transport case. The method selected must provide for the permanent attachment to vehicle. A minimum of two locks shall be placed between radioactive source and the public when the device is being transported, IN ADDITION to the locks securing the Type A package to the vehicle."
Why am I not notified prior to an inspection by the Radiation Health Branch?
The general policy of the Agency and a requirement of the State's agreement with the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission is to perform unannounced inspections. You may be contacted by an inspector to schedule an inspection if there are time and travel constraints or it is a more efficient use of resources to make advance accommodations.
